The long-standing editorial initiative of the journal “Plant Protection” has established the practice of presenting in detail the achievements and merits of the national agricultural institutes. In this issue, we cover both the historical path of the Institute of Plant and Genetic Resources “K. Malkov” in Sadovo and its activities and significant contribution to agricultural science not only at the national, but also at the international level.

The establishment and development of agricultural science in Sadovo has gone through several important historical stages, which are presented in the new issue of the journal “Plant Protection” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katya Uzundzhaliyeva, Director of the IPGR.

The main scientific areas at the Institute are focused on the collection, study and conservation of plant genetic resources and active breeding of wheat, triticale, oats, rye, rice, peanuts, sesame, peas, chickpeas and other crops. The National Seed Genebank of the country, established in 1984, is also located in Sadovo. Its task is the implementation of scientific programmes for long-term and medium-term conservation of germplasm through seeds under controlled conditions and FAO standards. A main priority of the IPGR team is the preservation of the diversity of cultivated plant species and their wild relatives through several types of collections that are conserved in situ.

Targeted breeding and improvement work on wheat in Bulgaria started as early as 1902 as part of the scientific programme of the First Agricultural Experimental Station in Sadovo. At the beginning of the last century, wheat breeding in Bulgaria was methodically correctly established by Konstantin Malkov, who is the founder of agricultural science in our country. Throughout its nearly 120-year history, wheat breeding has invariably been present in the programmes of the scientific institutions that have existed on the territory of Sadovo. Work has been carried out

using all known classical methods; more than 45 varieties of common winter wheat have been developed and introduced into practice, as well as new genetic germplasm carrying valuable agronomic traits.

The Institute in Sadovo also participates in the development of European agrarian science as part of various and innovative international projects.
