Issue 6/2018 of the journal „Plant Protection” is expected to be published on 9 July. The theme of the issue is leafy vegetables and herbs, which are an important „player” in a healthy diet. We will acquaint you in detail with the specifics of the agrotechnology, nutrition, periods and schemes of cultivation of the well-known crops on our market – lettuce, head lettuce, dock, rocket, endive and rhubarb, celery, parsley and dill, lovage, basil and spearmint. In addition to the great diversity of leafy vegetables and herbs, diseases and pests affecting them should not be underestimated when it comes to their cultivation and production. Therefore, the specialists from the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute have prepared detailed information on the types of harmful organisms as well as on plant protection products for vegetable crops.

During the last month, under unfavourable climatic conditions, grain producers in Dobrudzha have complained of a mass attack of their crops by brown leaf rust. Prof. Ivan Kiryakov, PhD, from the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute in the town of General Toshevo analyses the topic in depth and answers consecutively all questions concerning this insidious disease.

It is interesting to know that Bulgaria is the northern limit of the distribution of the fig tree, which, especially in the southern regions, is a typical and preferred fruit species. Unfortunately, the only insect specialized in feeding on fig leaves – Choreutis nemorana (fig skeletonizer moth) – is also found in our country. You will learn from this issue of the journal what damage it causes and what the adequate control measures are.

The Central Laboratory for Quarantine in Sofia announces the new quarantine pests which, as of 2018, are included in Annex 1 of Ordinance No. 8 on phytosanitary control. Only in the journal can you see which these new quarantine pests of fruit and ornamental plants and of vegetable plants are.

In July it is important to continue plant protection care in the orchard. During this period, in some regions the harvesting of late-ripening sweet cherries and sour cherries continues, and for apple, plum and peach the harvesting of fruits from early cultivars begins. It is important to know that during this month, in apple orchards, with frequent showers the risk of scab infection increases, which necessitates treatment with appropriate plant protection products.

In our monthly calendar we have also prepared a system for the protection of brassica crops, useful and practical for every producer of these vegetables.

Another meeting between producers from the region and Bayer specialists was held at the trial field in the land of the village of Popgrigorovo, Dobrich region. You can read in the journal about the meeting and about the results from the application of various technologies in the cultivation of the main crops in the country. Our team also attended the Open Field Day in the land of the Agricultural Cooperative Divdyadovo, Shumen, where new Bayer technologies in wheat and maize were demonstrated.

In this issue we will introduce you to Eng. Yordan Koichev and Stoyan Zhelyazkov, managers of the company MURRA 2002 in the village of Lozenets, Straldzha Municipality. MURRA 2002 is one of the few companies in Bulgaria that simultaneously produces both crop and livestock products. The success of this format depends exceptionally on expert involvement, because agriculture is a lifelong magic and there is no force that can break it.

In issue 6 of the journal we will also tell you about the International Field Days, Bulgaria 2018, hosted for the first time by the Agricultural University, with BASF Bulgaria, Crop Protection Division, as the general sponsor of the event. On the innovative platform, located at the training-experimental and implementation base of the university near Plovdiv, the representatives of several dozen multinational companies operating on the Bulgarian market presented „live”, in real conditions, the action of their products from their commercial portfolios – plant pro-

tection products, fertilizers, seeds, machinery.

Several institutes from the system of the Agricultural Academy took part in this large-format innovative open-air event. Also present here were the successful Bulgarian companies Ekofol and Agronom.
