Pupils from “Geo Milev” Primary School in Belozem won first place for funding of a biomass composting system. This year, primary and secondary schools from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Ukraine participated in the green projects competition.

Through the “Think Green” campaign of the “Kronospan” Foundation, the pupils and teachers at “Geo Milev” Primary School in Belozem will be able to turn the accumulating waste in the schoolyard, as well as the biological waste from the school canteen, into biomass. This process will be carried out using the composting method. A modern mini-farm with Red Californian Worm (Lumbricus rubellus) has also been established at the school for the production of environmentally friendly bio-fertilizer. The final result can be seen in the organic garden for herbs and spices, created under a project of the Eco-Association “For the Earth” in 2015. In this way, the school in Belozem is turning into a closed system: the biomass obtained from the composting process will undergo disinfection in the farm for Californian worms and will then be used as environmentally friendly fertilizer in the organic garden for herbs and spices.

“Kronospan” Foundation

Since 2014, the “Kronospan” Foundation has been marking World Environment Day by giving young people in Eastern Europe the opportunity to become agents of change, to identify nature-related problems and to take action to protect the Earth for future generations.
