The determination of species and varieties for new plantations is done depending on the soil and climatic conditions and the biological characteristics and requirements of the plants.
Among the climatic factors, the thermal regime is of the greatest importance for fruit crops.
The terrain of the location primarily influences the temperature and water regime. Cold air descends down the slopes and accumulates in the lowest and enclosed places, which is why they are not suitable for planting fruit crops. Most fruit species develop best on rich soils with an alkaline to slightly acidic reaction and in sunlit locations that are sufficiently protected from the winds.
If the terrain is flat and has irrigation possibilities, it is suitable for growing apples, pears, quinces, peaches, etc.
If, however, the terrain has a steeper slope, where moisture is also harder to retain, and lacks irrigation possibilities, plums, apricots, almonds, cherries, sour cherries, walnuts, etc., will develop well there.
The choice of varieties is also closely dependent on the biology of flowering and pollination. Apple, pear, sweet cherry, almond, some plum, quince, and sour cherry varieties cannot self-pollinate. When planting new trees of these species, at least two varieties that are good pollinators are selected. When one variety has more valuable qualities, it is chosen as the main one, and the second one is included only as a pollinator variety. The main variety and the pollinator varieties must begin fruiting simultaneously and bloom at the same time. For these species, trees of 3-4 varieties should be planted. In walnuts, the non-simultaneous ripening of male and female flowers is observed, which is why several varieties should be planted to ensure good pollination.
