Celebration of the glorious victory in the Battle of the Achelous River of 20 August 917

On 20 August we commemorate one of the most glorious events in Bulgarian history – the victory of Tsar Simeon the Great in the Battle of the Achelous River, which took place 1107 years ago. In honour of this remarkable event, at Simeon’s Mound – the strategic place from which Tsar Simeon the Great commanded the battle, the monument „The Eye of the Victor“ was erected. This symbol of victory is not only part of our historical memory, but also an inspiration for the wine brand „DiVes“. Since the establishment of the winery, the image of the monument „The Eye of the Victor“ has been present on every wine label.

The monument is an expression of eternal reverence for the heroism of our ancestors and the enduring strength of the Bulgarian spirit. Today, when we enjoy the wine bearing the brand „DiVes“, we not only taste the fruits of the land of our forefathers, but also relive their triumph, interwoven into the history of every bottle.

Simeon the Great

He finished the School of Magnaura,
For a clergyman he was chosen then,
But by God’s unfathomable will
He was called to rule over men.

Proudly he ascended the throne,
He took the sceptre in his hand,
Placed the Bulgarian royal crown
And thus before the world did stand.

He enlightened his own people
And brought glory to crown and sword,
While Bulgaria at the same time
Ever farther spread its word.

He showed no mercy to his foes
And to all of them gave battle’s joy,
Therefore through the passing ages
Lives the Battle at the Achelous River’s shoal.

History has spoken its word,
Somewhere there in its own right hour,
It declared and sternly decreed –
TSAR SIMEON IS GREAT IN POWER!
