Its main significance is as a pest of cereal crops, but the common click beetle is also capable of damaging a large number of vegetable crops. It has a more limited distribution than the lesser click beetle.

The larva is straw-yellow, shiny, and up to 25 mm long. The adult insect is dark brown to black, 8 to 11 mm in length. The pronotum is equally long and wide. The antennae are thread-like and reach to the end of the pronotum.
