Hristiyan Uzunov, a student from the Agricultural University in Plovdiv, presented to a broad audience the philosophy, energy and policies of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS), of which Bulgaria is now also a member.
The interest in this presentation, held in one of the lecture halls of the Agricultural University in Plovdiv, turned out to be unexpectedly high. Present were representatives of the business sector – leading managers from BASF, Syngenta, Pioneer, Summit Agro, many university lecturers headed by the Rector of the Agricultural University Prof. Hristina Yancheva, students from various agricultural research units in the country, and journalists.
Hristiyan Uzunov, Chair of the Bulgarian Student Committee in Agricultural Sciences (IAAS Bulgaria), part of IAAS, which currently includes 11 students from the Agricultural University, presented the conceptual platform of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences. Its structure comprises 10,000 students in 95 committees at 80 universities in 42 countries on all continents of the planet.
The general mission of IAAS is to contribute, through ideas, programmes, projects and concrete actions, to shaping the vision of the future agro‑specialist.
This vast global network, in which there is now, fortunately, also Bulgarian participation, is a powerful engine of progress in the global agro‑space. There is not a shadow of doubt that world agriculture is on the threshold of a large‑scale transformation. Its intensity must increase several times over in an extraordinarily short period of time. This is the only way to multiply production and overcome the deficits in food balances in many regions of the planet. For this to happen, according to the IAAS concept, leaders are needed – specialists who are more global, more flexible, more committed!
IAAS is a worldwide student organization in agricultural sciences headquartered in Belgium. It was established in 1957 in Tunis, with members from only 8 countries. At present, the student organization has its own committees in universities in more than 40 countries around the world. Its goal is to unite the knowledge, experience and ideas of students and young scientists in the field of agricultural sciences.
