Powdery mildew on vegetable crops from the family Apiaceae – attacks all above-ground parts of crops from the family Apiaceae – carrots, parsley, celery, dill. It is particularly dangerous for flowering stems in seed production stands. Under severe attack there is a real risk that the seeds will not ripen. Two pathogens cause powdery mildew on species from this family – Erysiphe umbelliferatum and Erysiphe heraclei.

Powdery mildew on leafy vegetables – spinach (causal agents Oidiopsis haplophylli, Leveillula spp., Uncinula spp.), lettuce and salad greens (causal agent Golvinomyces cichoracearum)

Powdery mildew on okra (causal agent Erysiphe cichoracearum)

Control:

  • Growing resistant varieties;
  • Sowing in well-ventilated locations;
  • Optimal crop density;
  • Balanced fertilization;
  • Control of environmental conditions through regular ventilation and installation of ventilation equipment;
  • Systematic monitoring of the crop for early detection of infection (inspection of leaves on both sides);
  • Treatment with plant protection products – preferably preventive ones, alternating products with different modes of action to prevent resistance development;
  • Suitable plant protection products – with active substances such as sulfur, myclobutanil, strobilurins, neem oil extract, phytofungicides and vegetable oils.
