On June 16, the largest scientific research center - the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute - General Toshevo held its traditional open day, demonstrating that despite the difficult financial situation and mass layoffs of specialists, Bulgarian agricultural science is still developing there.
Turkey has shown interest in wheat varieties, where "Aglika" and "Galatea" are already recognized and respected by our southern neighbors. Another 7 varieties have been submitted for approval, and within a month or two, the common winter wheat "Kalina" and the durum wheat "Severina" are expected to be recognized, announced the director of DAI, Ivan Kiryakov. The advantages of local varieties lie in their drought resistance and winter hardiness, as well as the fact that they are steppe-type, unlike European varieties, which are selected under humid conditions. Recognized Bulgarian sunflower hybrids exist in Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine, with approval expected in Belarus and Kazakhstan. The newest selection of the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute includes varieties from 2012-2013 - wheat Pchelina, Rada, Kosara, Kami, Katarzhina and Tina, durum wheat Melina and Mirabel, winter two-row barley Akhat and Yaspis, triticale Lovchanets and Dobrudzhanets. Since its establishment in 1951, over 120 Bulgarian varieties have been created at the institute, occupying a large part of the varietal structure of our agriculture. The research activity of DAI currently works on an area of 22,000 decares of agricultural land.
This year, a total of 65 cereal crop varieties were sown in the initial seed production units of DAI - 50 wheat varieties, 9 triticale varieties, 3 barley varieties, and 3 durum wheat varieties. It is planned that during the autumn sowing campaign, agricultural producers from the region and the country will be offered basic seeds of 13 wheat varieties, 5 triticale varieties, and one brewing barley variety.
