Good agricultural practices in the production of cereals, legumes, and sunflower in a risky climatic environment

The Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute participates in the project „Good agricultural practices in the production of cereal, legume crops and sunflower in a risky climate environment“ under the European Union Rural Development Program, 2014 – 2020.

At the end of May, the first demonstration under the project was held on the topic: „Plant breeding in response to climate change and sustainable production of safe food“. The aim of this one-day training-demonstration was to show farmers how varieties – selected by DAI – perform in the conditions of a changing climate in Southern Dobrudzha. Participants had the opportunity to take part in practical sessions on hybridization of wheat and barley plants, as well as to taste products produced at the institute: craft beer from its own malting barley varieties, bread made from the institute's high-quality wheats and from triticale – an increasingly relevant crop, whose application for bread production has excellent dietary qualities and is becoming more and more sought after.

Back to Bulgarian breeding for higher quality and sustainable wheat production in a risky environment

A practical demonstrative training was conducted at the Laboratory Complex of DAI in Dobrich, where, under controlled climatic conditions, participants learned about low-carbon and sustainable practices in the breeding process and seed production, including interesting aspects of biotechnologies applied to cereal crops at the institute. Farmers from the entire region of Dobrich and General Toshevo municipalities, as well as from Razgrad, Varna, and Silistra, participated.

On June 11 and 12, 2024, the next two demonstrations under the project are scheduled, concerning the cultivation of legume crops under abiotic and biotic stress, as well as the use of pesticides in conventional and organic crop production in the Dobrudzha region.

The new generation of sunflower hybrids from DAI are a highly intensive format for yield management

A demonstration training on the productive potential of sunflower hybrids created at DAI – both conventional and herbicide-resistant – is also planned for mid-July.
