A well-known model of a herb garden is the so-called herb spiral. It shows how species that otherwise require different climatic conditions are arranged in a small area. How is the desired effect achieved? Shade- and moisture-loving plants are planted on the northern side of the spiral garden or at its base, while a lavender bush, for example, which is tolerant of drier soil and prolonged sun, is planted at the very top. At the base, a container is placed to collect rainwater, and in it and upwards under the soil and into the root system of the plants, an easily irrigable wick is placed, for example, a cloth twisted into a rope. The garden represents four climatic zones in one – dry or Mediterranean, temperate, humid or tropical, and aquatic. The herb spiral is usually placed close to the kitchen to be easily accessible for every cooking and need for fresh herbs.
