Following the success of the first edition of the EU Organic Awards, the call for applications for the second edition has been open since the end of March and will run until 14 May 2023, the EC announced.
The EU Organic Awards distinguish various actors in the organic value chain who have developed an innovative, sustainable and inspiring project, leading to real added value for the production and consumption of organic food. The award ceremony will take place in Brussels on 25 September 2023.

The EU Organic Awards are jointly organised by the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Committee of the Regions, Copa-Cogeca and IFOAM Organics Europe, with the participation of the European Parliament and the Council in the awards jury. Eight awards will be presented in seven categories: Best Organic Farmer (female and male), Best Organic Region, Best Organic City, Best Organic "Bio-district", Best Organic Food Processing SME, Best Organic Food Retailer, Best Organic Restaurant/Food Service.

Any EU actor or institution in the organic value chain with an outstanding project contributing to better price and/or accessibility of organic products in the EU may apply. They will be assessed against the criteria of excellence, innovation, sustainability and the possibility of replicating the project in other locations in the EU, thereby contributing to greater availability of organic products in the EU. The winners will help raise public awareness of organic production in the EU.
The share of agricultural land in the EU used for organic farming increased by more than 50 percent in the period 2012–2020, with an annual increase of 5.7 percent, according to the latest market information published by the European Commission.
By producing high-quality food with low environmental impact, organic farming plays an essential role in the development of a sustainable food system for the EU. In 2021, the European Commission adopted an Action Plan in support of the objective of at least 25 percent of agricultural land in the EU being under organic farming and of a significant increase in organic aquaculture by 2030, as set out in the "Farm to Fork" Strategy and in the Biodiversity Strategy. In this context, Member States had to set national targets for organic farming in terms of organic production in their Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plans and in their National Organic Action Plans.
"The EU Organic Awards demonstrate the opportunities and potential of organic farming. We all know that organic methods protect ecosystems and natural resources, but last year’s winners proved how sustainable, profitable and productive organic farming can be. I was impressed by the passion and entrepreneurship of the farmers, businesses and local authorities who took part in last year’s awards, and I look forward to discovering more inspiring stories this year. I encourage everyone involved in the EU organic sector to participate and to provide their positive example of sustainable food production in the European Union," urged the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski.
