In the July issue of the journal „Plant Protection” the main topic is the celebration of the 90th anniversary of pomiculture science and the presentation of the Plum Experimental Station in Dryanovo. Central place in the issue is given to the plum as an important and valuable fruit species and to the bred cultivars, the result of the long-term work and experience of the scientists in Dryanovo. At present, the station has a rich collection of local, introduced and domestically bred cultivars from the genus Prunus. The collection plantation consists of 41 introduced, 5 cultivars bred at the experimental station, and 16 local plum cultivars. Another main field of work of the team is the technology for organic production of plum fruits, including the choice of suitable training systems and pruning; organic fertilization; environmentally sound plant protection technology for plums and myrobalan plums.
In this issue we will also introduce you to the main pests of plum in the region of the Central Balkan Mountains. The persistent occurrence of a third generation of codling moths is a serious threat to plum growers in the region. In recent years, the population density of tetranychid and eriophyid mites has also seriously threatened plum production.
The plum is a traditional crop for Bulgaria and in the first half of the 20th century plum orchards occupied 50-60% of the area of fruit species in our country. With the establishment of industrial plum plantations, favourable conditions are also created for the development of rust on the main plum cultivar – Kyustendil plum. The Agricultural University in Plovdiv provides us in detail with new studies that give grounds to adjust the time forecast for control of the pathogen. Naturally, the plum, like all fruit species, is a host to a number of viruses, bacteria and fungi causing significant damage, greatly reducing fruiting and deteriorating the quality of the fruit production. Among the fungal diseases, brown rot, red leaf spots and rust cause significant damage. Another extremely insidious disease of the plum is sharka (plum pox). The causal agent of the disease is Plum pox virus (PPV), which attacks wild and cultivated species of the genus Prunus – plum, myrobalan plum, peach, apricot, almond, sweet cherry and sour cherry. The only effective control measure against these dangerous pathogens remains the use of virus-free planting material and control of the vectors of the disease.
