Day of Open Doors at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute

On 7 June 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo, the traditional event – Open Day will be held, which this year is included in the celebration of the Days of Todor Rachinski (5–7 June). On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the eminent wheat breeder, an International Scientific Conference on “Modern Breeding and Agronomy of Field Crops – Innovative Solutions and Perspectives” and an Open Day at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute are being organized.

Open Day – 7 June 2019

The participants will be presented with the varieties of cereal crops grown in the experimental fields and production plots of the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute. They will be given the opportunity to observe on site the development of seed-production stands of common and durum wheat, triticale and barley varieties bred at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute, seeds of which will be offered to farmers for the autumn sowing campaign of 2019. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit demonstration plots sown with five field bean varieties, four of which are suitable for direct mechanized harvesting. Specialists from the Institute will provide information on specific issues related to the main advantages and cultivation technology of the offered varieties.

After the tour of the experimental fields and production plots, a discussion on the problems of grain production in the region and the country, as well as business contacts, are planned.

Days of Todor Rachinski

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the eminent wheat breeder, the Agricultural Academy – Sofia, the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo, the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria – Dobrich Branch and the National Association of Grain Producers are organizing the Days of Todor Rachinski between 5 and 7 June 2019.

Within the framework of the event, the following will take place:

International Scientific Conference: “Modern Breeding and Agronomy of Field Crops – Innovative Solutions and Perspectives” – 5–6 June 2019, Park Hotel “Izida” – Dobrich. The main objective of the conference is to promote the application of innovative solutions in the breeding and agronomy of field crops, which open up new perspectives for the development of competitive agriculture.

In memory of Todor Rachinski (1929–1980)

Todor Rachinski is a renowned scientist and breeder who established and developed agronomic science as leading and competitive at the global level. His breeding work and studies on wheat grain quality inspire his contemporary Bulgarian colleagues and international breeders and demonstrate Rachinski’s immense commitment to local agricultural science.

He was a wheat breeder at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute from 1963 until his death, and Director of the Institute from December 1974 to 1980.

In the period 1970–1979 he created 22 wheat varieties, among them Rusalka, Charodeyka, Yubiley, Trakiya, Ogosta, Skitia, Rubin. He developed theoretical and methodological issues in the applied genetics of wheat. He carried out valuable research on the inheritance of quantitative traits determining wheat productivity, as well as the most detailed studies on grain quality and the possibilities, through breeding, to combine high productivity with high technological parameters.

He was the first to assess and use global breeding achievements and introduce them into the agricultural practice of the country; the first to develop and implement short-stemmed wheat varieties with increased productivity and high lodging resistance; he used new genetic sources to increase ear potential, resistance to diseases and other stress factors, and to improve grain quality. He is the author of 55 scientific and popular-scientific publications, which are a valuable source of information for scientists with a wide range of research activities and in particular for geneticists, breeders, lecturers and students.

He completed his life’s journey on 26 December 1980 in a car accident, leaving behind a lasting legacy and valuable heritage for future generations.
