In 2019, the journal “Plant Protection” will publish 9 specialized supplements under the title PHYTOSANITARY PROBLEMS IN VINEYARDS, which will be distributed together with the main printed body. The choice of topic is dictated by several circumstances. Viticulture is one of the priority subsectors of Bulgarian agriculture. The trend of its development has stable parameters. As a result of long-term and far-sighted state policy over the past 10–12 years, the vineyards have been renewed and modernized, the varietal composition has been changed, and the intensity of their cultivation has been increased.
At the same time, this predominantly super-modern, highly competitive production, meeting European and global standards, must develop and succeed in a complex, dynamic, contradictory and often extreme phytosanitary environment. And what is important to note is that this “multifaceted” situation continues to become more complicated. Contributing to this are the rapid and irreversible changes in climate, whose hyperactive negative characteristics are turning into a limiting factor, causing deviations in pest behavior and increasing their aggressiveness and resistance to the action of pesticides. On the other hand, the invasion of invasive species, stimulated by the growing movement of goods in the EU and worldwide, continues to gain momentum.
In this contradictory situation, the positioning of a modern, powerful, innovative plant protection system, based on the latest avant-garde achievements of the global agrochemical industry, is becoming more relevant with each passing day – as an effective tool for risk management and as a key part of precision and sustainable agriculture.
The journal “Plant Protection” invited leading Bulgarian phytopathologists, entomologists and herbologists to share their scientific knowledge, experience and observations on highly effective protection of vineyards in a complex phytosanitary environment, because the first thing that can help every professional winegrower today is specialized information at a high expert and scientific level. Thanks to such multifunctional information, strategies for adequate and successful actions against each pest can be defined.
