On 8 March issue 2/2018 of the journal „Plant Protection“ was published. The topic of the issue is the apple, which is not accidentally called the queen of fruits by Prof. DSc Vasiliy Dzhuvinov from the Fruit Growing Institute in Plovdiv. After 2005 apples surpassed oranges and grapes. And from 2010 to the present (with 70.6 million t) they have consistently occupied second place on the fruit market – in 2016 their production reached nearly 90 million t.
This growth can be explained by the great adaptability of the apple to diverse soil and climatic conditions. In this issue we will acquaint you with the varietal diversity, qualities and advantages of the apple as a fruit, its production in Bulgaria, as well as forecasts and plant protection. We will also answer the question of how to keep your apple orchards free from weeds. Never underestimate the weevils, which damage a number of agricultural crops: apple, pear, sweet cherry, sour cherry, plum, oilseed rape, cabbage, onion, strawberry and grapevine. In apple orchards the apple blossom weevil, the apple golden weevil and the red-winged fruit weevil are usually encountered. We have not forgotten the viral and phytoplasma infections, which are the main problems in the production of healthy planting material of pome fruit species and in the cost-effective production of fruit.
In the „Traffic light“ section we will remind you that now is the time for pre-bloom sprayings, and in addition you may start taking care of garden legume crops.
In this issue we will present Bayer’s new product – Xarvio, which is aimed at integrated and sustainable agriculture in a digital environment and is expected to enter the Bulgarian agricultural market soon.
The Plovdiv-based company ID Imperial is launching a new conceptual model for an integrated approach to the country’s agricultural producers.
We will look at agriculture in the Sliven region through the eyes and experience of the company Viola AE, which started its commercial season at a large presentation forum in Hisarya.
Undoubtedly the biggest news in plant protection came at the beginning of the year from BASF, which presented its multifunctional fungicide Priaxor for cereal crops. Read in this issue about the qualities of the new product and about the technical meetings at which it was officially presented to farmers.
In the supplement „Dangerous pathogens of agricultural crops” Prof. Ivan Kiryakov will present the leaf spots on cereal crops – septoria leaf blotch, drechslera.
