Yellow rust is back in Bulgaria

Eight years have passed since the problematic 2015, when Bulgarian farmers had to cope with the challenge of combating the mass occurrence of yellow rust in wheat.

Today, in several regions of Bulgaria already, alerts are being raised about the occurrence and rapid spread of the disease, caused by the favourable conditions for the development of the fungal disease.

Yellow rust is widespread in the more northern and cooler regions, while in our country it appears during a prolonged wet and cool spring, such as that of 2023. An important prerequisite for its rapid spread are the constant and strong winds that carry the pathogen over vast distances.

It mainly attacks wheat, barley and rye, as well as a large number of cereal grass species.

Under favourable conditions (temperature and atmospheric humidity), it spreads extremely fast and causes significant damage to grain production, reaching 50% and more of the yield potential of the crops.

Its symptoms are observed on the leaves and more rarely on the stems, glumes and unripe grains.

Lemon-yellow, narrow, longitudinally arranged stripes appear on the leaf blades, on which small, raised, linearly arranged yellow uredinia are formed in straight parallel rows like a seam between the veins. They remain covered by the epidermis for some time and are difficult to distinguish at the first symptoms of infection.

The affected plants have suppressed growth, remain short, their leaves twist and scorch, and as a result small and shrivelled grains are formed.

In order to prevent mass occurrence and spread of the pathogen, it is recommended that farmers regularly inspect their cereal fields.

It is recommended to use registered fungicides for the control of yellow rust as a preventive application or at the first visible symptoms of infection.

Due to the real risk of mass occurrence of yellow rust, CORTEVA recommends the use of fungicides with proven efficacy against the pathogen, providing maximum protection at real and “working” doses.

CORTEVA AGRSCIENCE BULGARIA RECOMMENDS:

For preventive applications – the fungicides: UNIVOC®, INOVOR® and VERBEN®, which deliver excellent results in the field.

In case of an already existing infection and manifestation of first symptoms – immediate reaction with the fungicides: UNIVOC® and VERBEN®, which possess strong curative action.

MORE ABOUT THE PRODUCTS:

UNIVOC® offers exceptionally protective, stopping and curative action against all economically important diseases in cereal crops.

Univoc® – out-of-this-world protection against diseases in cereals

UNIVOC® is a two-component fungicide containing prothioconazole, which is one of the newest triazoles with systemic, eradicating and protective action, and the entirely new active substance Inatreq™ active from a new chemical group and a new mode of action against a broad spectrum of diseases.

UNIVOC® is applied in a flexible dose depending on the timing of application, as follows: T1 – 120 ml/da; T2 – 120 - 130 ml/da.

UNIVOC® has a proven, superior effect and protection against yellow rust, confirmed by independent sources in Europe (AHDB, Harper Adams University, ADAS, NIAB, SRUC research), compared to combined products on the market based on prothioconazole, Revysol and tebuconazole.

iQ-4™ formulation for almost 100% coverage of the plant parts of the crop and complete absorption.

VERBEN® has been specifically improved to provide highly effective disease control, leading to better and long-lasting protection. The improved formulation ensures excellent redistribution of the product over the leaf surface.

Attention! Attention! Verben® – a new broad-spectrum fungicide for perfect disease control in cereal crops

The fungicide VERBEN® contains two active substances, proven in practice for the control of economically important diseases in cereal crops, such as powdery mildew, septoria on leaves and ears, brown rust, yellow rust, helminthosporiosis, fusarium on the ear, stem base rot, leaf spots, net blotch and ramularia. The excellent synergism of the two active substances ensures reliable disease control and helps to achieve yield potential.

The application rate of VERBEN® is extremely flexible depending on the timing of application, as follows: T1 – 60-70 ml/da; T2 - 80 ml/da; T3, with a spray volume: 15-40 l/da.

INOVOR® – a fungicide from BASF’s AgCelence® concept. The combination of pyraclostrobin with fluxapyroxad has a prolonged protective action, protecting against the penetration of pathogens, and a stopping action that destroys already developed spores.

A step up in protection

INOVOR® performs flawlessly against septoria species, rust species, net blotch, leaf blight, drechslera, powdery mildew, with the recommended application rates being – T1 – 75 ml/da and T2 – 90 ml/da.
