During this period, the vines are from the phenophase “bud swelling” to the appearance of the “first inflorescences”.
Powdery mildew
The pathogen overwinters in the buds and on the shoots as mycelium, which starts to develop at a temperature of 6.2°C. Powdery mildew attacks all green parts of the plant – leaves, shoots, inflorescences and berries.
Pest control strategy
In the presence of symptoms on the shoots, the first spraying is carried out at the phenophase “green shoot (butterfly)” or at a shoot length of 6-8 cm.

Vines are most susceptible to excoriose after bud swelling
Excoriose of grapevine
In a cool and wet spring, the disease develops strongly. From the attacked buds, the shoots emerge later and have shortened internodes, while the leaves are small and deformed. The symptoms on the green shoots are: dark, dot-like swellings which enlarge into bigger, dark brown, elongated spots. The critical period for disease development is from “bud swelling” to the phenophase “3rd - 4th leaf”.
Pest control strategy
The first treatment is carried out when 30-40% of the buds are in the phenophase from “green shoot (butterfly)” to “first leaf separated”. In a cool and rainy spring, a second spraying is carried out when 30-40% of the buds at the base of the shoots are in the phenophase “second-third leaf”. The subsequent treatments coincide with the sprayings against downy mildew and powdery mildew in the vineyard.

European grapevine moth
At the end of April, the flight of butterflies of the overwintered generation and the beginning of egg laying start. Depending on the temperatures, the eggs hatch after 4-10 days.
European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana)
Pest control strategy
Treatment should be carried out at the EPV (economic threshold) – for table grape varieties 4-6 eggs or larvae/100 inflorescences, and for wine varieties – 6-8 eggs or larvae/100 inflorescences.

Grapevine erineum mite
Damage is caused by the larvae and adult mites, which suck sap from the lower leaf surface and, less frequently, from the upper surface. At the feeding sites, as a result of enzymes secreted by the mites, the tissues proliferate and become deformed. Galls are formed, concave on the lower and convex on the upper surface.
Pest control strategy
Spraying is carried out at a shoot length of 6-8 cm, when the mites become active and move onto the young leaves, before they have formed galls.
