At the beginning of January, agrometeorological conditions will be determined by cold weather, with critical minimum temperatures for some of the overwintering agricultural crops. In some of the field areas, snowfall will form a snow cover that will protect the autumn crops from the harmful impact of the forecast low temperatures, in places down to minus 15–17°C.
In the absence of snow cover and with a more prolonged persistence, these negative values will cause frost damage to the weakened, poorly hardened winter cereal crops, especially to the stands overwintering in the germination stage at the agrometeorological stations Buzovets, Knezha and Kyustendil, and in the second–third leaf stage at the agrometeorological stations Nikolaevo, Glavinitsa, Targovishte, Tsarev Brod, Sliven and Karnobat. Under conditions without snow cover, negative temperatures of this order are also critical for rapeseed stands that have failed to form a rosette during their autumn vegetation. Values below minus 16–17°C will be hazardous for the buds of some dessert grapevine varieties (Bolgar).
During the period, the forecast below-normal temperatures will limit the carrying out of pruning in fruit crops. During the first ten days of January, preparation for the production of seedlings for early field vegetable production (early tomatoes, early cabbage, cauliflower) will begin in the protected cultivation facilities.
