New European Commissioner for Agriculture

Phil Hogan (54) has been selected by Jean-Claude Juncker as the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in the new European Commission (EC).

Until 2014, Hogan was the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government in the Irish government.

Phil Hogan is a member of the Irish Fine Gael party. He has been a member of parliament and briefly served as Minister for Finance with special responsibility for the Irish Public Services Organisation of the Civil Service.

Within the party, he has held important portfolios. He oversaw the food industry (1989-1991), dealt with consumer protection issues (1991-1993), regional issues and European development (1993-1994), enterprise, trade and employment (2002), and the environment, heritage and local government (2007-2011).
