Dangerous pathogens in agricultural crops

In 2018, the journal “Plant Protection” will publish 9 issues of a special supplement DANGEROUS PATHOGENS IN AGRICULTURAL CROPS, which will be distributed together with the main printed body.

The choice of topic is based on several circumstances. In recent years, the phytosanitary environment has been marked by increasing uncertainty and instability; it is changing very dynamically, in many cases unexpectedly, often aggressively and on a broad front. The boom of fungal pathogens is no longer a rare phenomenon; they follow one after another in a hardly predictable cyclic pattern. This situation enormously complicates symptomatology, diagnostics and the definition of appropriate control solutions.

There are several reasons for the changes in the characteristics of the infectious background. One of them is the rapid and irreversible change in climate. As a result, the behavior and activity of pathogens are changing. Another reason is the rapid spread of invasive pathogenic species. The third is the introduction in our country of foreign cultivars and species which in many cases have an immune system uncertain for our conditions.

Under this massive attack, if the farmer does not react adequately, he pays a high price not only for the current harvest but also for the future one, because the infectious background changes, inoculum accumulates...

Our leading phytopathologists possess scientific expertise, observations and forecasting studies regarding the occurrence and spread of many of the dangerous pathogens (some of them new to Bulgaria), as well as regarding their control. And they agreed to provide their competent opinions. The journal “Plant Protection” sets itself the ambitious task of collecting, arranging and publishing all scientific views on this topical issue, which can undoubtedly help agricultural producers to formulate the correct decisions in the right direction, to structure conceptual plant protection strategies and to protect effectively their production from the growing danger.
