On 13 February 2018, the first issue of the year of the journal “Plant Protection” will be released from print. In it, Prof. A. Kharizanov will present the changes in the climate in the agro-ecological region of Plovdiv in 2017 and, in particular, the changes in temperature, precipitation and humidity, which determine the “behaviour” of diseases and pests in crops.

Temperature, precipitation and humidity are key factors for insects and their deviations from normal values, the optimum and the vital zone in the habitats significantly affect their phenology, vital activity, population density and damage. And the causes –

of fungal diseases and some bacterial phytopathogens are also most strongly influenced by precipitation and humidity.

The increased trade exchange and free trade in the European Union in recent years have led to the introduction of new insect species. The past year was a real challenge for the survival of boxwood after the devastating invasion of the box tree moth. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nedyalka Palagacheva and Prof. Ivanka Lecheva from the Agricultural University in Plovdiv will tell us about its impact in the country and the necessary measures for protection against this aggressive pest.

The topic of pests is also addressed in the article on pests of the order Diptera in fruit crops. According to Prof. Yanko Dimitrov and Assoc. Prof. Nedyalka Palagacheva, fruit flies are a rather underestimated group of pests, since they have little economic importance. However, in certain years they can seriously damage fruit crops.

In the “Traffic light” section, we will present in detail the plant protection measures in the orchard and the vegetable garden in February.

In this issue we also focus on two important technical meetings of the companies BASF and Summit Agro.

The topic of the supplement, which will be issued together with the print body of the journal in 2018, will be – Dangerous pathogens in agricultural crops.

And the readers of “Plant Protection” have the privilege to receive in February, free of charge, the special edition – Chickpea – Technology for cultivation and achieving a high health status, together with the first issue of the journal. The emphasis is on the protection of the crop from weeds, diseases and pests. The aspect of using the appropriate bacterial inoculant for good atmospheric nitrogen fixation is also covered.
