The attack on the palm by the red palm weevil remains invisible for months, sometimes years. Hundreds of larvae can develop inside the trunks before symptoms appear on the leaves. The presence of the weevil is detected by the appearance of a weeping brown, sticky fluid or by small brown clusters of chewed fibers at the base of the palms. In a severe attack, the trunk may break. If we approach the palm, we may hear a noise - like a crunching sound, caused by the feeding larvae.
