The main reason for the reduction of European subsidies in the agricultural sector are the planned reforms that will compensate for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Reducing subsidies for large beneficiaries and seeking a way to allocate more funds to small and medium-sized producers will be one of the main tasks of the European agricultural government.
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the Union will impose sanctions that will be expressed in the reduction of subsidies in the agricultural sector. A decrease of 3 billion euros in the EU agricultural budget is expected, stated the European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan to the online edition of the German media “Spiegel” on Saturday.
According to the Commissioner, all farmers who use sustainable practices will be able to benefit the most from future subsidies. “If farmers want to retain direct subsidies, they must participate actively in achieving the common objectives of the Union’s agricultural policy,” added Phil Hogan. “This can be achieved by reducing subsidies for large beneficiaries and seeking a way to allocate more funds to small and medium-sized producers,” the European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan further stated in his announcement.
