The theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity, announced for 2015 by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal, Canada, is "Biodiversity for Sustainable Development". The message reflects the importance of the efforts of all countries to establish Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the United Nations Development Programme (Post-2015) for the period 2015-2030 and the significance of biodiversity for achieving sustainable development.
The choice of theme highlights the adoption of the Gangwon Declaration by ministers and participants in the high-level ministerial segment of the Twelfth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in South Korea in 2014. The Gangwon Declaration underscores the importance and key contribution of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, its 20 Aichi Targets, and its 2050 Vision to the implementation of the United Nations Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals agenda. The Declaration welcomes the importance given to biodiversity in the final document of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals.
