Wines from the Struma Valley
The valley of the Struma River is a region renowned for its millennia-old winemaking traditions. The terroir of the region is unique for Bulgaria. The climate is transitional Mediterranean. The average annual temperature in Sandanski is 14.1°C, and the average relative air humidity is the lowest in the country – 66%. The mild and dry climate and the proximity of the Aegean Sea are favourable for the cultivation of vineyards that yield grapes with excellent characteristics. The typical local varieties are Melnik 55, Shiroka Melnishka Loza, Melnik 82, Sandanski Misket, Keratsuda and Tamyanka.
The resulting wines are characterised by warm southern tones on the nose, fullness on the palate and richness of overall impressions. Of particular interest are the wines from the Shiroka Melnishka Loza variety, which are rich and sufficiently full-bodied and, with ageing, acquire exotic and very pleasant nuances in their taste.
