"To build a sustainable climate future for the planet, we must invest in forests. This is an important political commitment that simultaneously binds intelligent policies, effective enforcement, innovative partnerships, and funding.", Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General
Did you know that... forests in the European Union amount to 155 million hectares. This means that 42% of the EU's land area is covered by forests.
The day was marked in countries around the world with the organization and holding of a series of events aimed at presenting the grandeur of forests and their irreplaceable role in providing functions and benefits essential for human existence, such as providing clean air, drinking water, protection from natural disasters, preserving biodiversity, and mitigating climate change.
This year's celebrations on the theme are under the headline "Forests, Climate, Change", aiming to highlight the connection between forests and climate change.
The Union of Foresters in Bulgaria hopes to provoke a public response that will trigger large-scale actions to protect the "green wealth".
At the University of Forestry - Sofia and the Park Hotel "Moscow", a scientific conference "Forestry: Bridge to the Future" will be held from May 6-9, 2015. The conference is organized by the University of Forestry and the Faculty of Forestry on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of higher forestry education in Bulgaria.
