International scientific project calls on citizens to participate in cultivating various bean varieties

For the third consecutive year, the international scientific project „INCREASE Citizen Science Experiment“ calls on all citizens interested in cultivating crops to join the cultivation of new bean varieties.

Anyone who owns a smartphone and a balcony, garden or arable land, as well as the necessary enthusiasm for growing different bean varieties, may register to participate in the project no later than

28 February 2023.

In the previous two years, thousands of committed citizens from 27 European countries took part in this experiment, whose objective is the conservation and improvement of biodiversity in Europe. This year, all interested citizens can register for participation through the dedicated mobile application „INCREASE CSA“.

Each participant will receive seeds of six different bean varieties to cultivate while documenting their development by uploading photos and assessing specific traits in the „INCREASE CSA“ application. This will support the project’s scientific team in assessing the characteristics of more than 1000 bean varieties, with the aim of improving biodiversity in Europe.

The „INCREASE CSA“ mobile application is free to download from all digital platforms and is available in different languages. Every participant in the project can register and use the application to document all their observations during the cultivation period.

The main objective of the project is to valorise biodiversity and to promote the cultivation and consumption of pulses in Europe. The experiment is guided by the principles of the European Commission for: „open science, open innovation and openness to the world“, making use of digital technologies to render science and innovation more global.

Deadline for registration and participation in the project: 28 February 2023.
