During the second ten-day period of July, no precipitation of agricultural significance was recorded over the field areas of the country. This deepened the deficit of soil moisture reserves in the one‑meter layer in Western and South Central Bulgaria.
At the end of July, the agrometeorological conditions will be determined by hot and dry weather. Above-normal temperatures with maximum values above 35°C, in places reaching and exceeding 40°C, will disrupt the normal course of physiological processes and will lead to a shortening of the interphase periods in agricultural crops. During the period, depending on the length of the vegetation period of the individual hybrids, maize will be in the phases of tasseling, flowering, silking, grain formation, and in some locations in the Danube Plain also milk ripeness (agrometeorological stations Kneja, Novachene and Silistra).
In sunflower, flowering, formation and filling of the seeds will take place. The hot and dry weather during the period will necessitate the application of increased irrigation rates for vegetable crops and maize.
During the period, in many places in the field areas, the absence of moisture in the arable layer will hinder and delay the proper implementation of seasonal soil tillage operations.
In perennial crops and vegetable crops, plant protection spraying against diseases and pests continues – against powdery mildew and the grapevine moth in vineyards, against powdery mildew, fruit worms and mites in fruit species, and against powdery mildew and mites in vegetable crops. When carrying out chemical control, products with a short pre-harvest interval should be applied, during the cooler hours of the day.
