Forest Week is traditionally held at the beginning of April. This year we celebrate the Forest Holiday between 4 and 10 April under the motto “I
THE FOREST!”
Foresters and forest officers also celebrate their professional holiday, devoted to their love for the forest. Happy holiday!

In 1925 the holiday was motivated by the desire and urgent need to afforest the bare mountain slopes and to landscape the towns and villages. The first “Afforestation Holiday” was held on 12 April and then coincided with the Annunciation. Therefore, its celebration began solemnly with a prayer service in front of the “St. Alexander Nevsky” Cathedral, and 420,000 forest seedlings and 20 kg of forest seeds were planted.
Over the years, the responsible task of foresters to care for the forest has grown into various initiatives, talks, mass afforestation campaigns and drawing the attention of society as a whole to the fact that the preservation of the Bulgarian forest is a priority for each one of us.
The New Forest of Sofia
Afforestation is starting for a new forest that will extend over an area of 137 decares in the land of the village of Negovan. At the initiative of Sofia Municipality and with the help of volunteers, 86,000 oak seedlings will be planted, with the idea of restoring the lost riparian forests in the area.
The aim of the project “The New Forest of Sofia” is to create a green belt of trees that will improve air quality in the capital.
In 2018, “The New Forest of Sofia” was launched with afforestation near Suhodol. Within six planting seasons, over 100,000 acacia and linden trees were planted on 225 decares. The afforestation was organized with the assistance and expert opinion of the foresters from the municipal enterprise “Municipal Land and Forest Management” of Sofia Municipality.
Gorata.bg
For another year one of the largest volunteer initiatives of “Gorata.bg” was held, which donated young seedlings for planting in 19 settlements in the country.
This past Saturday and Sunday, 15,000 saplings in Burgas, another 15,000 in Varna and 12,500 in Dobrich were distributed before the start of “Forest Week”. In Sofia, the organization provided 20,350 saplings of 14 tree species.
The team of the organization distributed fruit, melliferous and forest saplings to everyone interested. Among the most sought after were pine, linden and various fruit trees. Gorata.bg also provided detailed instructions for storage, planting and care of the seedlings.
