On 2 June 2021 (Wednesday) from 9:30 a.m. at the Institute of Plant and Genetic Resources “Konstantin Malkov” in Sadovo, a “Farmer’s Day” will be held. The Institute will present not only its new wheat varieties, but will also open the doors of its rich National Gene Bank, its Botanical Garden and the museum associated with them. You are welcome!

Two new wheat varieties – “Sashets” and “Nadita” – will be presented by the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (IPGR) – Sadovo during the “Farmer’s Day” organized by the scientific unit of the Agricultural Academy on 2 June 2021. The participants in the initiative will be acquainted with the characteristics achieved by the breeders in the two varieties for efficient and high-yield production.

The winter wheat “Nadita” is a high-yielding and economical variety with wet gluten content above 30%, approved by the Executive Agency for Variety Testing, Field Inspection and Seed Control (IASAS) in 2018. Its creators, among whom is Assoc. Prof. Zlatina Ur, have successfully combined high yield potential with the possibilities for efficient use of nitrogen. This leads to a reduction in production costs and, accordingly, to better economic results for farmers.

In variety commission trials it has yielded over 1000 kg/da in Northern Bulgaria, which is more than the two foreign standards Annapurna and Avenue. It has a high hectolitre weight. Recent results from a technological laboratory prove that it maintains high quality. It has very good winter hardiness and lower drought tolerance, therefore it is recommended for the northern regions.

The other winter wheat variety “Sashets” combines high quality and good yield potential, as well as efficient use of nitrogen for the formation of a unit of production. These advantages of the variety lead to lower production costs and better economic results for farmers. The variety “Sashets” has very good productive tillering, medium-sized grain and a long, very well-grained ear. It possesses excellent bread-making qualities. It is tolerant to brown rust and powdery mildew in wheat and is resistant to stem and yellow rust. It has very good winter hardiness and drought tolerance. It is characterized by large grain – absolute mass about 43–47 g.

Those present will also have the opportunity to become acquainted with the Institute’s developments for alternative and organic farming, as well as to view its rich collections of the National Gene Bank, Botanical Garden and museum.
