In the last issue of the journal „Plant Protection” for 2020, the main topic is the benefits and significance of „ecosystem services”.

The proper functioning of ecosystems is due to the providers of these services, who are often an integral part of ensuring clean drinking water, waste decomposition, natural pollination of crops and other plants.

The widespread application of agricultural practices, especially those related to plant protection, does not take into account the possible effects on the environment. Treatments with pesticides, without taking into consideration the population density of pests, are often unnecessary, and with the destruction of a small number of pests, their natural enemies – predators and parasites, as well as pollinators, are inevitably destroyed as well. The balance is disturbed and recovery is slow and difficult. Recognizing the importance of ecosystem services, the EU finances large-scale projects and introduces regulations in support of their conservation. One such scientific project, funded under the Horizon 2020 programme – EcoStack, aims to develop and support ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture through the use and protection of functional biodiversity, thereby also supporting the providers of ecosystem services. The project involves 24 partner institutions from 13 countries, including the Agricultural University in Plovdiv.
