Pesticides are discussed extensively and continuously, especially in the context of modern agriculture, which is increasingly striving to define itself as sustainable and oriented towards environmental and biodiversity protection. But do we really know everything about them and what exactly do we know? In this issue we will address these and other questions related to their origin, the pests on which they are applied, the mode of penetration of the active substance, toxicity, doses and applications.

It is clear that the chemical approach in the control of pests in cultivated plants is not the only solution and must always be applied with moderation and precise knowledge, but in recent years a worsened phytosanitary situation has been observed in agricultural agrocenoses with the presence of new pathogens, which necessitates the development and modification of the pesticides used.

To overcome the emerging problems, new syntheses are being carried out and classes of fungicides with a broader spectrum of action are being sought, which are effective and at the same time ecologically safer for the plants and the produce obtained.

In Bulgaria the use of pesticides against harmful organisms is strictly regulated – every year the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry approves a list of products authorised for placing on the market and for use, the crops and the application rates. The application of zoocides and the other groups of pesticides must comply with the requirements of Good Plant Protection Practice, Integrated Pest Management and the basic principles of Integrated Plant Protection, in which the economic injury levels are fundamental

(EIL) and environmental protection.
