Autumn meetings with the plants in the botanical garden of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The annual “Autumn Meetings with Plants” will be held from 12 to 19 October 2019 in the Botanical Garden of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 10:00 to 16:00.

On 12 and 13 October the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will take place and admission will be free on these days. In the greenhouse there are plants dating back to the time of the Royal Botanical Garden, as well as plants that have survived and been preserved during both World Wars.

During the “Autumn Meetings with Plants” visitors will have the opportunity to participate in talks and consultations organized by the Botanical Garden and dedicated to the diverse and unique plant collections. Guests of the garden will be offered short talks on orchids, bromeliads, begonias, succulents and other popular ornamental plants. If the weather is favourable, the programme will also include planting of trees and shrubs.

It is noteworthy that in the Botanical Garden, for the second time, one of the most impressive cycad plants – the African fierce encephalartos (Encephalarthos ferox)  will once again form a cone, which is a very rare occurrence. In general, cycads are contemporaries of the dinosaurs and represent a very ancient group of spiny plants. By the opening of the event, the African fierce encephalartos, which is a male plant, is expected to welcome enthusiasts of the Botanical Garden with a beautifully intense orange cone.

13:00  Consultation „Most Common Pests of Houseplants“ (L. Krastanov)
