At the end of November the last issue for this year, 10/2017 of the journal „Plant Protection“, will be released. The theme of the issue is the current problems in forest protection. In this issue we will present the phytosanitary status of the forests on the territory of the Southwestern State Enterprise in Blagoevgrad in 2017, as well as the increase in the population density of bark beetles, which are among the main pests in our coniferous forests. Read also about the dangerous pathogens on pine and about the new methods for limiting the spread of European mistletoe in forest ecosystems and fruit crops.
At the end of the year you will also meet an unfamiliar crop for our agriculture and cuisine – artichoke (Cynara scolymus). The tradition of its use is long and dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Initially it was used as food from nature, but subsequently the artichoke was cultivated and today it is considered a useful vegetable rich in bioactive compounds.
Eriophyid mites are strictly phytophagous, attacking annual and perennial plants, grasses, shrubs and trees. They possess high species specificity with respect to the host, according to Prof. Dr. Vili Harizanova and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanaska Stoeva. Attention to them, apart from the direct damage resulting from their feeding, is also due to their role as vectors of phytopathogens, and in particular plant viruses. Interestingly, eriophyid mites can also be beneficial from the point of view of plant protection, because they are used for weed control in agricultural areas.
In our new section „Innovations“ we will tell you about one of the largest food exhibitions in the world and about the future of eating habits and home farms.
In the section „Traffic Light“ you will learn which are the diseases occurring during storage of fruits and grapes in the autumn-winter period.
In this issue we will also present the new top-class system of Arysta LifeScience for vine protection. The Editor-in-Chief of the journal „Plant Protection“, Vesela Shishkova, reveals why modern Bulgarian agriculture increasingly needs expert presence and high professional competences.
