In the Christmas issue of the magazine „Plant Protection” we look towards the upcoming year 2020. The next year has been declared the International Year of Plant Health by the UN General Assembly. This global initiative is expected to raise public awareness of how to protect plant health, address the growing problem of increasing poverty and hunger, and pay more attention to the conservation of biological diversity and the environment as an extremely important part of public life.
One of the main topics that will be a priority during the International Year of Plant Health is expected to be phytosanitary control and its leading role in plant protection. This is why the establishment of phytosanitary partnerships at national, regional and global level will be a key task not only of the upcoming event, but also of international plant protection in the future. The plant protection industry is increasingly focusing on the development and implementation of sustainable and flexible models for controlling new pests, as well as on the discovery of their natural enemies.
Bulgaria, which is a contracting party to the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and an EU Member State, supports the International Year of Plant Health – 2020. The campaign in our country will be organized under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Food, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAFF), the non-governmental organizations – ARIB and BARZ, producers’ associations, research institutions and agricultural universities.
The magazine „Plant Protection”, in its capacity as media partner of the BFSA, will participate in and report on all events organized and held during the International Year of Plant Health, in order to ensure wide publicity and awareness on the topic.
