Ivailovska Kapia is a high-yielding variety on the Bulgarian market

A new pepper variety – Ivaylovska Kapiya, with a high dry matter content (up to 9–10%), has been developed jointly by the Experimental Station for Irrigated Agriculture – Pazardzhik and the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute, according to the Agricultural Academy (AA).

The high percentage of dry matter makes Ivaylovska Kapiya simultaneously suitable for roasting, pickling and fresh consumption. The variety is characterized by a double-walled, two- or three-chambered fruit, often with a small hook at the tip. In its green stage it is light to normal green. The thickness of the fruit (pericarp) is up to 8–9 mm. The fruits are highly attractive and are distinguished by a glossy and smooth surface. This was reported by the Director of the Experimental Station, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristina Georgieva, during a meeting between the President of the Agricultural Academy, Prof. Dr. Vasil Nikolov, and the staff of the Experimental Station for Irrigated Agriculture – Pazardzhik, held on 1 September.

The variety “Ivaylovska Kapiya” is suitable for cultivation under medium-early open-field production technology, but it could also perform very well in greenhouses for obtaining earlier produce. Ivaylovska Kapiya is demanding with regard to its preceding crop. Therefore, it is imperative to avoid monoculture cultivation of pepper after pepper or after other crops from the family Solanaceae, as this leads to yield reduction and deterioration of product quality. Good preceding crops are representatives of the families Fabaceae and Poaceae, as they leave the soil free of weeds and with an improved structure.

The variety was developed by an authors’ team consisting of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristina Georgieva, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Velichka Todorova, Prof. Dr. Stoyka Masheva, Prof. Dr. Galina Pevicharova and Chief Assistant Ana Samodova.
